What is a System Boiler?

A System boiler is the second most popular type of installation, behind the combi boiler. A System Boiler, just like a conventional boiler, work on the basis that they generate heat through a boiler which is usually mounted on the wall, this then heats water which is stored in a large cylinder whch is usually located on the landing in your airing cupboard. When you need hot water from your taps, the water is readily available as it is already stored. There are downsides of this however, as once the hot water is used in large volumes there is potential that it will run out.

System boilers come in two types, a vented low pressure and an un-vented high pressure system. Both require a Hot Water cylinder. Vented system boilers require a storage tank but most of the other components are held in the unit itself which means that installation is quicker and cheaper. Also, the hot primary water is pumped through the system to the radiators and hot water cylinder resulting in a faster response and more economical running costs. Un-vented system boilers incorporate the equipment necessary to form a sealed system including a pressure relief valve and a pressure gauge, removing the need for a feed and expansion tank.

This makes the system boiler a very appealing option if you have a property with multiple bathrooms or outlets, installation is not as messy due to the system not requiring a storage tank. Generally, installation will be quicker and more straight forward.

Suitability, Install Difficulty & Cost

Suitability
If you have a property which has multiple bathrooms which may all require hot water at the same time. A system boiler is an ideal option for you as it will be able to maintain water pressure across multiple outlets. If you do not have multiple bathrooms, we'd reccommend a combi boiler.

Installation Difficulty
Depending in what you already have in place, a replacement boiler should be a relatively straight forward install. Many of the main components are already integrated so there is no need for additional accessories/parts.

Typical Cost
If you already have a system boiler in place, you should be looking in the region of £1000-£1,500 for a replacement. To get the best price, compare multiple quotes for a new system boiler here.
